Welcome to the SCS Novel House Wiki! 

 

 

This wiki could be one that a teacher starts that is then run by students.  It is a great way to extend learning and create link between home and school.

 

 

First things first - what is a wiki?

 

• A wiki is an online document (a webpage) that can be edited right inside the web browser.  That means that these webpages are shared by everyone on the team or class. 
• You can add any kind of information you want - even pictures

 

• Wikis are free, online writing spaces. Wikis use simple formatting rules, so you don't need to understand HTML or an HTML authoring tools, such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver to contribute.
• Wikis are designed as a writing space. Wikis are not meant to be a final presentation space or a course management system (Like Moodle). Wikis make it possible for writers to continually build upon, revise, and edit a piece of writing or contribute to a topic.

How can teachers use wikis?

Provide a space for free writing

Debate course topics, including assigned readings

Share resources such as annotated bibliographies, websites, effective writing samples, conferences, calls for manuscripts

Maintain a journal of work performed on group projects

Require students to collaborate on documents, such as an essay written by the entire class

Discuss curricular and instructional innovations

Encourage students to revise Wikipedia pages or take on new wikipedia assignments

Inspire students to write a Wikibook

Support service learning projects (i.e. use wikis to build a website about a challenge in their city)
